Hygiene Barriers for People With Physical Challenges
There are many reasons for physical disability. It may be due to permanent disability or recovery from surgery or illness. In any case dignity equals independence, especially in the bathroom. An activity as basic and private as use of the bathroom should not be a daily battle.
Here are some suggestions to make life easier on the person facing physical challenges:
- If the bather is mobile but needs some extra support, be sure to have properly installed grab bars.
- For those who have had hip replacement surgery, consider a special toilet seat; a bedside commode is another option.
- If a shower is preferred, install a shower chair. Also consider a sliding, hand-held shower head. This will allow other family members to use it.
- A swivel seat lets you turn in the car seat without having to twist your body.
- A car caddy or grab bar will provide support exiting a vehicle.
- Long handled combs, brushes, and toenail scissors help to extend the reach.
No one solution will be the right fit for everyone. Each person and condition will require customization. Keep in mind that as the population ages, people are going to need more help recovering from hospital stays, coping with mobility limitations, and dealing with chronic illnesses.
